Traditional leaders gifted vehicles in Mpumalanga

Traditional leaders receive new vehicles from the Mpumalanga Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs to strengthen community service capabilities.

Two traditional councils received brand-new vehicles to boost daily operations, in honour of traditional leaders for their role in preserving culture and supporting communities.

Inkosi MM Shongwe of the Matsamo Tribunal Council in the Nkomazi Local Municipality received a white Ford Ranger, while Inkosi SM Mabena Manala of the Makerana Traditional Council within the Thembisile Hani Local Municipality received a black Ford Everest SUV.

The special handover was conducted by the MEC for co-operative governance, human settlements, and traditional affairs, Speed Mashilo, with the provincial chairperson of the Mpumalanga House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders, Kgoshi Mathupa Mokoena, on May 4.

Mashilo said the handover forms part of a long-standing tradition of providing vehicles to traditional leaders to help them carry out their duties effectively.

“Traditional leaders often travel long distances to attend community meetings, resolve disputes, participate in cultural events, and work closely with government departments on issues affecting local communities. The vehicles are, therefore, seen as important tools that assist them in serving the people better,” he said.

Mokoena emphasised that the cars will improve the visibility of traditional leaders within their respective communities.
