Culture and community unite at vibrant music event in Hazyview

Fifiz Lodge in Alexandar united the community through a vibrant celebration of Tsonga culture, music and local economic empowerment.

The newly established Fifiz Lodge brought energy and excitement to Alexandar on May 1 and 2, when young and old gathered for a vibrant celebration of culture and music.

The event blended traditional rhythms with modern sounds as the popular Tsonga dance, Mchongolo, took centre stage.

The performance saw strong community participation, creating a lively atmosphere that kept guests entertained throughout the day.

Event organiser Khomba Shibiti said the initiative was aimed at bringing people together while preserving a cultural tradition loved by many in the area.

“I have noticed that a lot of people love this dance, but they are forced to travel long distances to watch it. I decided to bring it closer to home so they don’t have to spend a lot of money travelling far,” he explained.

The event featured various traditional dance groups that kept the crowd entertained.

As the evening progressed and children and elders headed home, local DJs took over, ensuring the festivities continued into the night.

Shibiti said the establishment of a venue in a rural setting was intentional, aimed at creating opportunities and shifting perceptions about the area. “Our area is often associated with crime and a lack of opportunities. I wanted to change that by building something that creates jobs where people live,” he said.

He added that the lodge is already benefitting the local economy as nearby residents gain from increased foot traffic and business opportunities during events.

Shibiti emphasised that his long-term vision is to expand opportunities for the community, but this depends on local support. “I need the community to support this initiative so it can be sustainable and continue creating jobs for families,” he said.

The event highlighted the power of culture and local enterprise in bringing communities together while opening doors for economic growth.
