Community members receive social distress essentials in Mpumalanga

The Department of Social Development, in partnership with the Ashraful Aid International Organisation, donated social relief packages in the Nkomazi and Bushbuckridge areas.

The Department of Social Development, in partnership with the Ashraful Aid International Organisation, handed over more than 141 social relief distress packages to residents in Nkomazi and Bushbuckridge.

The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to provide relief and support to families affected by floods that occurred recently. The Nkomazi outreach began in Steenbok, where 58 families received relief packages, and continued in Masibekela, where 83 families were assisted.
Each package included a food parcel, a gas stove and complete kitchen utensil sets, to assist families as they rebuild their lives following the devastating floods that occurred in January.

The executive mayor of Nkomazi Local Municipality, Cllr Phindile Pertunia Magagula, received the packages on behalf of the families and appreciated the stakeholders for their support.

“As a municipality we are always affected by floods, and we appreciate those who care for the people of Nkomazi. Families are the backbone of society,” she said.

Mohammed Luqman Wadee from Ashraful Aid said they witnessed the impact of the floods first hand and would not remain silent.

On Wednesday, May 13, the Bushbuckridge, the executive mayor, Cllr Matlanatso Lydia Moroane, led the distribution process that began at Hlavukani and ended at Dwarsloop. The items that were distributed included bulk grocery hampers, cleaning materials, gas stoves with canisters, kitchen utensils and cutlery.

Moroane expressed gratitude to Ashraful Aid International, the Department of Social Development, Ehlanzeni District Municipality, the Industrial Development Corporation, and the Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs for their invaluable support.

She extended her gratitude to the Gift of the Givers and the Collen Mashawana Foundation that supplied relief aid during the disaster early this year, and implored other humanitarian organisations to assist.
