Research team leads dialogue on urbanisation at UMP
Two South African universities came together for a dialogue on urbanisation in the former homelands in Mpumalanga.
The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) in partnership with the University of the Witwatersrand hosted a dialogue workshop on urbanisation in the former homelands of Mpumalanga. The focus was on engaging in research aimed at influencing policy, strengthening food security, improving land governance and promoting economic development in the province.

The dialogue, held on Saturday, May 16, focused on understanding the challenges and opportunities associated with the urbanisation of former homeland areas, while exploring practical, research-driven solutions that can contribute to sustainable development.

Participants discussed the importance of evidence-based policymaking in addressing socio-economic inequalities, improving service delivery, and supporting communities affected by rapid urban growth and changing land-use patterns. Stakeholders emphasised that strengthening partnerships between academic institutions, government and traditional leadership structures is essential in driving inclusive growth and ensuring long-term sustainability in Mpumalanga.

Participants included researchers, government representatives, district municipalities, traditional leadership structures and various stakeholders from different sectors. Through open discussions and knowledge-sharing, the workshop created an opportunity for stakeholders to exchange insights, identify challenges and develop collective approaches towards improving livelihoods and promoting sustainable economic development within the province.
