Matsulu-based community organisation empowers youth through sport and support

A Matsulu-based organisation is changing lives by using sport to steer young people away from crime and substance abuse, giving them purpose and hope for a better future.

A local community organisation, aims to empower youth and prevent youngsters from engaging in criminal activities and substance abuse.
Matsulu Executive Developments was established on June 16, 1987, by Aaron Hlahla, during a time of political and educational struggle in South Africa. It was formed with a clear purpose: to support and guide young people who spend most of their time on the streets, often without direction or positive influence.

In the beginning, the initiative focused on bringing young boys together through sport, but in 2010 it expanded its focus to include girls, in recognition of some of the challenges they face.

“We encourage young people to participate in various sporting codes. We seek to keep the children off the streets and engage them in positive activities. For us, sport is a tool; not only for physical development, but also for building character, confidence and life skills,” said Hlahla.

The programme is structured into different age groups to ensure proper growth and progression. For boys, the divisions include U7, U12, and U15 and for girls, particularly in netball, it includes U7, U13, and U15.

“The organisation is committed to fighting against gender-based violence and addressing the issue of teenage pregnancy, especially among young girls. Through sport, education and counselling, we aim to create a safer and more supportive environment for all,” he said.

Over the years, Matsulu Executive Developments has become a community-driven effort that continues to shape lives, inspire youth, and build a stronger future.
