Sitintile Secondary School learner to represent SA in Sweden
Sinenhlanhla Sikhulile Nkosi from Sitintile Secondary School will represent South Africa in Sweden after developing an innovative solution to reduce microplastic contamination in water.
Sinenhlenhla Sikhulile Nkosi, a Sitintile Secondary School learner, will represent South Africa at the Stockholm Junior Water Prize competition in Sweden in August.
This came after he won the Provincial Innovation Challenge for the Water and Sanitation competition, demonstrating exceptional scientific innovation and commitment towards addressing pressing environmental challenges.
“Being announced as a winner made me incredibly proud of myself. It made me realise that with hope, determination and family support, you can achieve anything,” Sinenhlenhla said.

His project focused on reducing microplastic contamination of water caused by the degradation of plastic containers and pipes when exposed to ultraviolet heat. It explored the design and testing of a silicone-based elastomeric coating to act as a protective barrier inside plastic containers. This would prevent the release of harmful microplastic particles and endocrine-disrupting chemicals into water, thereby reducing health risks.
“Following this achievement, I have already started collecting more data and expanding my research. I am excited about the opportunity to represent my work on an international stage and continue raising awareness about the impact of microplastics on the environment,” he said.

The Mpumalanga Department of Education commended Sinenhlanhla, his educators, parents and the entire Sitintile Secondary School community for the outstanding accomplishment.

The department said beyond the honour of representing South Africa internationally, participants such as Sinenhlalnhla are also afforded opportunities for comprehensive bursaries linked to water and environmental studies.
“The Place of the Rising Sun commends him as his success demonstrates that when young people are empowered and supported, they become active contributors towards building a safer, healthier and more sustainable future for all.”
