Leader, mentor and unifier: Moepi laid to rest

Kgoshi Jeoffrey Tlhame Moepi was laid to rest on Saturday during a royal funeral attended by dignitaries and community members.

Kgoshi Jeoffrey Tlhame Moepi of the Bakgatla ba Mocha ba Moepi Traditional Council was laid to rest on Saturday during a royal funeral ceremony held at the royal residence. He passed away at the age of 79 on June 19.

He will be remembered for the role he played as a member of the executive committee of the Mpumalanga Provincial House of Traditional and Khoisan Leaders, where he made a significant contribution to strengthening the institution of traditional leadership within Mpumalanga. He led the Bakgatla ba Moepi for almost 30 years.

The chairperson of the Mpumalanga Provincial House of Traditional and Khoisan Leaders, Kgoshi Mothupi Mokoena, also attended the funeral.

At the funeral and the special memorial service that took place at the Marapyane Community Hall on June 25, dignitaries from government, traditional, political and civic societies reflected on his thoughtful insights, constructive engagements, and deep commitment to ensuring that traditional leadership remains relevant in addressing the social and developmental challenges facing communities.

His family honoured him for leading them as a family. They described him as a family unifier, who respected everyone and treated them with respect and integrity.

The MEC for cooperative governance, human settlements and traditional affairs, Speed Mashilo, described the late leader as humble, approachable, and very protective of his community. Mashilo described Moepi’s legacy as one of commitment to his people, culture, and heritage, which will continue to inspire generations. He attended the memorial service.

Funeral proceedings at the royal house

At the funeral, the MEC for sports, culture and recreation, Leah Mabuza, said: “As you journey to join your forefathers, we give thanks for a life devoted to your people. Though your physical presence is no longer with us, your legacy will live on in every child who knows our cultural customs, every elder who remembers your counsel, and every community strengthened by your leadership.”
