 More than 1 000 arrested in Mpumalanga

Operation Shanela, led by the Mpumalanga acting police commissioner, leads to the arrest of more than 1 000 suspects.

Mpumalanga police arrested more than 1 000 suspects during Operation Shanela over the weekend. The operation was led by the acting Mpumalanga police commissioner, Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi. On Friday, Mkhwanazi and other senior officers led an operation in the Calcutta and KaBokweni policing precincts.

The team raided illegal liquor outlets that are regarded as generators of contact crimes such as murder, assault and rape.

The suspects were arrested for a variety of crimes including murder, attempted murder, rape, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and robbery.

Among those arrested were 222 foreign nationals, who were charged with contravention of the Immigration Act. Across the province, 139 suspects were arrested for illegal dealing in liquor. The suspects started appearing in various magistrate’s courts on Monday.
