Sassa announces revised payment dates for grant beneficiaries under review

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has announced revised payment arrangements for social grant beneficiaries whose grants have been selected for review.

“Beneficiaries who do not receive their grants on August 4, 5 or 6 should not panic or rush to their nearest Sassa office. If their grant is under review, payment will be made on Friday, August 7,” said Sassa.

The agency has urged beneficiaries to collect their grants on the fourth payment day before visiting their nearest Sassa office to complete the review process. Failure to comply with a review request may result in a grant being suspended or terminated in line with the Social Assistance Act.

SMS notifications alert recipients

Sassa highlighted that beneficiaries selected for review will be notified via SMS, making it important for grant recipients to ensure their cellphone numbers and other contact details are always up to date. Beneficiaries are advised to inform the agency of any changes in their residential address, financial circumstances or if they travel outside the country, as these factors may affect their eligibility.

Required documents for verification

The agency explained that grant reviews are a legal requirement aimed at ensuring social assistance reaches eligible beneficiaries, helping Sassa to:
• Verify that beneficiaries continue to qualify for assistance
• Protect the integrity of the social assistance system
• Prevent fraud and abuse
• Maintain an accurate and up-to-date beneficiary database.

When reporting for a review, beneficiaries should bring all relevant documents needed to confirm their continued eligibility. These include:
• Valid South African identity document
• Proof of income
• Recent bank statements
• Proof of residence
• Documents relating to their marital status where applicable.

Depending on the type of grant received, additional documents such as children’s birth certificates, school attendance confirmation or death certificates may also be required.

Support for bedridden beneficiaries

Sassa has advised beneficiaries to attend their review appointment as soon as possible after receiving notification. Those who are bedridden or medically unable to visit a Sassa office should contact the agency, as an authorised representative may be appointed to assist them.

To improve service delivery and reduce queues at local offices, Sassa encourages beneficiaries to make use of its digital and online services wherever possible.
