Bruiners to defend Origins title

South African golfer Heinrich Bruiners will defend his Vodacom Origins of Golf Tour title at the Euphoria Golf Estate Mookgophong on Wednesday.

With this being the only course on the Sunshine Tour which was designed by a woman, Bruiners says he is looking forward to the event and hoping to play his best golf.

“I love Annika Sorenstam’s course. The greens are tough and you need to really think about what you’re doing before you putt,” he told Citizen.

“I’m very impressed with her design. The bunkers are set up perfectly in the landing areas, so you can’t just stand on the tee and say, ‘I’m going to bash one down there’. There’s a lot of strategy required from off the tee.”

Last year, Bruiners finished five strokes clear of the field and is hoping to do the same against a tough field which includes last year’s joint runners-up, Adilson da Silva and Jake Roos.

Titch Moore, the current Telkom PGA Championship champion, Keith Horne, Trevor Fisher junior, Christiaan Basson, Danie van Tonder and Lyle Rowe are other contenders who will be vying for the title.

The Origins of Golf is one of the longest-running series on the Sunshine Tour, with six tournaments each played for a total prize money of R600 000.
