Pretoria and Joburg among ‘most dangerous’ cities in the world
Nambeo, a global crime database, rates Gauteng cities in the top 10 most dangerous cities.
Pretoria and Johannesburg were ranked amongst the ‘most dangerous’ cities in the world by the Numbeo 2020 crime index – a cause for concern, the DA said.
The two Gauteng cities included in the list of cities rated the most dangerous by the crowd-sourced global database of quality of life information’s latest crime index.
Pretoria was ranked number 4, with Johannesburg at number 6.
Two other cities in South Africa also made the list, namely Pietermaritzburg at number 3 and Durban at number 5.
“These rankings are worrying,” said DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Community Safety John Moodey.
“It indicates that our cities lack adequate policing and that our people’s lives and safety are under serious threat.”
Moodey said that this is an indication that South Africans do not feel safe in their homes and communities as crime continues to rise “while the SAPS is riddling with corruption and unable to fight crime”.
He said for the longest time the DA has been calling for the professionalisation of the SAPS to make the force honest, professional and one that serves and protects all South Africans.
“Our police are ill-equipped, untrained and under-resourced to adequately ensure that law and order is maintained in our communities and that there are effective arrests, prosecutions and convictions of criminals,” Moodey said.
He said the DA will continue to call for the establishment of specialised units within the police to help combat crime.
“We will also be tabling questions to the Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Faith Mazibuko in the Gauteng provincial legislature to determine what measures are being put in place to more effectively fight crime in Johannesburg and Pretoria,” he concluded.
Numbeo is a crowd-sourced global database of quality of life information including housing indicators, perceived crime rates and quality of healthcare, among many others.
The Gauteng Department of Community Safety has yet to comment on an enquiry sent to them by the publication.
