Minister promises to prioritise teachers and pupils’ safety
This as education sector continues to consult stakeholders on the amended school calendar.
Basic education minister Angie Motshekga promised to prioritise the health and safety of learners and teachers.
This as consultations on school recovery plans ahead of the reopening of schools during Covid-19 alert level 4 continued.
On Monday, Motshekga held a series of meetings with stakeholders in the basic education sector, including teacher unions. The purpose of the meetings was to consider the state of readiness for the reopening of schools.
Department of Education spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga said these consultative sessions took place ahead of Motshekga’s return to the national coronavirus command council, set to take place on Tuesday.
He said the cabinet was also scheduled to sit on Wednesday to discuss the education sector’s recovery plan.
Mhlanga said on Thursday that Motshekga will brief the media on the preparations towards the reopening of schools.
“At the media briefing, the minister will provide details that include the final dates and detailed plans for the phased approach to the possible reopening of schools,” Mhlanga said.
Mhlanga said Motshekga wished to reassure South Africans that the safety of teachers and learner and all employees is paramount in all the decisions that were taken.
