Regional Executive Committee takes a decision over Ekurhuleni mayor’s tweets
The ANC in Ekurhuleni has spoken out following a statement by the ANC national office regarding social media transgression by the regional chairperson and mayor Mzwandile Masina.

Masina found himself in hot water following a series of tweets in agreement with Economic Freedom Fighter Leader Julius Malema’s view to collapse the white monopoly.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, ANC regional spokesperson Sonnyboy Masingi said that a special Regional Executive Committee (REC) meeting was convened with the intention to establish the circumstances under which the transgression occurred as well as the context of the Twitter posts.
“The REC received and accepted presentation from the regional chairperson.
Upon thorough reflection, the REC noted and registered the following that ANC leaders, including the regional chairperson, must at all times adhere to the policy prescripts of the ANC as it relates to social media conduct.
The REC noted and appreciated the context of the social media post as explained by the regional chairperson.
The REC, however, expressed a firm view that discussions on economic policies or any other policy content must be articulated in line and consistent with the ANC policy positions, principles and constitutional prescripts,” says Masingi.
The meeting with the REC comes after the mayor dared the ANC to remove him as Ekurhuleni mayor.
According to Masingi, ANC leaders must at all times strive to protect the identity of the ANC from being diluted.
“The REC provided political counsel to the regional chairperson or the REC as a whole to confine views within the policy position of the ANC.
In this regard, any perspective or idea that supports the collapse of the economy is not a policy position of the ANC.
On the same note, the REC is of the view that the ANC led government must continue to advance radical socio-economic transformation in an effort to change the economic landscape and the unjust imbalances that continue to be visibly prevalent in the country.
This advancement must be contained within the objective pursuing the national democratic revolution,” he explained.
Masina did deactivate his twitter account and then upon return some posts had been deleted.
“The REC appreciates the retraction of the entire post that signalled the intention to resign.
The REC also took stock of the concerted efforts by certain media houses to project the views of the regional chairperson as if they are anti-ANC policy positions.
This attitude seeks to isolate the regional chairperson and to suffocate the transformation debate. REC further discouraged the unacceptable conduct of leaking of REC discussions.
As such, a strong warning was issued to all REC members to respect and protect all organisational and leadership discussions.
The special REC meeting also re-affirmed the centrality of its focus to the call for unity and renewal.
The REC agreed that structures of the ANC must prepare accordingly for the National General Council, wherein the assessment of the extent to which resolutions are being implemented will be undertaken.
The REC remains confident that the traditions, principles and practices that have ensured the existence of the ANC beyond a century, should at all times be respected and protected.
The REC, under the capable leadership of the chairperson remains committed to the values, ideals and discipline of the ANC.
In conclusion, the REC wishes to call for ANC structures in Ekurhuleni region to double their efforts in combating the effects of the pandemic within communities,” says Masingi.
