Two killed, four critically injured in Centurion shootout with police
Two people believed to be suspects were shot dead. Amongst the injured are two policemen and two other men believed to be suspects.
Two people were killed and four others injured during a shooting in Hennopspark, Centurion on Thursday morning, Pretoria Rekord reports.
Two of the injured are police officers who are believed to have been part of an operation that was held in the area.
Netcare911 spokesperson Shawn Herbs said paramedics were called to the scene at 09:04.
“There was an operation that was going on and two police officers were shot,” he said.
“One had sustained critical injuries after being shot in the face. The second police officer had sustained serious injuries after he was shot in his lower extremities.
“Both were treated on scene by paramedics from multiple services and both officers were airlifted to specialist facilities.”
Xander Loubser from Ambu-Link confirmed that two people believed to be suspects were shot dead on the scene, two critical patients also believed to be suspects were taken to hospital by ER24 and Emer-G-med respectively.
“What happened prior the shootout is subject to police investigation.”
Loubser said the police members were flown to Milpark hospital by Netcare911 helicopters after receiving advanced life support intervention on the scene.
“We would like to thank emergency services for their fast response. We also are keeping the two police officers in our prayers and thoughts,” he said.
Residents in the area were unable to leave or enter their premises as streets in the area were cordoned off. Zacdanïel Janse van Vuuren said the road between Theuns Street and Edison Crescent was affected.
“We are unable to leave our complex as the streets are cordoned off,” he said.
“I saw three helicopters fly in to come and help the injured police officers.”
Details around the event that led to the shooting are still sketchy.
Police are expected to give a full report later.
