Roodepoort police members cheat death in high-impact crash
Spokesperson for the station, Captain Balan Muthan confirmed the arrest of the motorist and the injuries of his colleagues.
A Honeydew Police officer is currently fighting for his life in hospital and another is recovering from minor injuries after they were involved in a freak accident on Sunday evening, 20 September, Roodepoort Record reports.
The usual crime-prevention patrols in the precinct went totally wrong for the duo when an alleged drunk driver in a red spots car caused an accident – the impact causing the heavy police van to overturn.
Spokesperson for the station, Captain Balan Muthan confirmed the arrest of the motorist and the injuries of his colleagues.
“The accident happened while both members were conducting their usual patrols. Jaws of Life had to be used to free a trapped member, and both were transported to Milpark Hospital. One member is in critical but stable condition, while the other who sustained minor injuries has been discharged,” he explained.
He added that a man below the age of 35 was arrested and charged with reckless and negligent driving.
When asked about the drunken driving claims, Muthan said the allegations would only be proven once the suspect’s blood had been taken and tested.
This is a developing story. An update will be published when additional information becomes available.
