Limpopo: 6 learners killed as bakkie slams into house

The deceased are five males and one female.

The MEC of Transport and Community Safety, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya in Limpopo has sent her condolences to the families of the six people killed in an incident on the D98 road on Friday.

According to the department’s Media Liaison Officer, Mike Maringa, the crash occurred at Ximixoni village at Malamulele in the Vhembe district.

“It is believed that a driver of a Toyota bakkie was driving at a high speed, lost control and hit a house. Six passengers, who were identified as learners who had hitch-hiked from school, were killed instantly. The deceased are five males and one female,” Maringa explained.

He said a further six people escaped with injuries.

“The driver of the bakkie was rushed to the local hospital in a critical state, while two passengers sustained serious injuries. A further three escaped with minor injuries,” he added.

Lerule-Ramakhanya is concerned that the province continues to lose people on the roads due to negligence and speed.
