Man robbed of firearm after shootout with thieves in Verulam

A 37-year-old man is lucky to be alive after he was shot in the leg and robbed of his firearm on Old Main Road, near the Canelands Library in Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday.

The SAPS and security forces responded to the scene and discovered that the victim sustained a gunshot wound to his leg.

Communications officer of Verulam SAPS, Cpt Henry Kisten, confirmed the incident. He said, “The victim was walking with his girlfriend when he was approached by three unknown suspects, who shot and robbed him of his firearm.”

The victim alleged that he was in the company of a woman when three unknown men approached him and produced firearms. Upon seeing the suspects’ firearms, the victim drew his hand gun and fired at the robbers.

They returned fire shooting him in the leg before stealing the firearm and fleeing the scene. Officers conducted an extensive search for the suspects, however, they could not be located.

Cpt Kisten said, “A case of attempted murder and armed robbery was opened at Verulam SAPS and is currently under investigation. No arrests have been made as of yet.”
