Residents urged to report emergencies, after 22 east homes destroyed

A severe storm damaged the shacks on New Year's eve, but seemingly, authorities were never informed.

Tshwane residents have been urged to report life-threatening emergencies immediately when they occurred, after 22 homes were damaged by a storm in December, last year.

Tshwane emergency services spokesperson, Charles Mabaso, said about 22 shacks in Onverwacht, near Cullinan, were damaged by a storm on 31 December 2021.

The storm left at least 64 community members without proper shelter during the cross- over celebrations.

“The incident was never reported as an emergency to the Tshwane emergency services department on the day it occurred.”

Mabaso said on New Year’s day, the disaster management officials found some of the residents busy rebuilding their dwellings.

He said the emergency services aided the affected community with relief materials, including 64 blankets and 40 mattresses.

“We urge residents to report life- threatening emergencies on 107 toll-free on all cellular networks and landline.”

No one has been relocated or hospitalised as a result of the storm, said Mabaso.
