Gauteng illustrator teams up with retailer to bring wallpaper to all

Game is distributing a South African-inspired print design that can be used to cover books, shelves or walls, or even inspire readers and shoppers to create their own artwork.

A vibrant design by a Joburg graphic designer will soon be in the hands of thousands of community newspaper readers and shoppers across South Africa.

The custom illustration by designer Kgabo Mametja, also known as Saint Rose, forms part of retailer Game’s Wallpaper for All initiative. Readers and customers who receive the retailer’s advertising insert in their local newspaper, or collect the specials catalogue in store, will also get a piece of printed paper with the design which they can use to create their own artwork or beautify their homes and workspaces.

“The design itself is inspired by South Africa and pays homage to Blue Cranes, the sun, marula trees and the land,” says Mametja.

“When I was approached by Game to take part in this collaboration, I was very excited by the idea. I believe in accessible art and finding beauty in places that aren’t always considered,” explains Mametja. “I remember my granny collecting items, such as paper, that struck her as beautiful and repurposing these in her home. This collaboration means we can inspire people to create their own art.”

Following a career in advertising, Mametja branched out on her own as a graphic designer and illustrator. Her work has been described as colourful, bold and vibrant. It typically explores narratives around black womanhood and intersectional feminism, seeks to understand which aspects of femininity are a blatant lie, and discusses the rollercoaster that is ‘mental wellness.’

She hopes people will use the artwork to cover their schoolbooks, line their shelving, frame as prints to hang on their walls or even use as wallpaper. With the same print being made available in Game catalogues every two weeks over a six-month period, customers can enjoy a consistent theme.

“South Africans are inherently creative, and we believe this campaign is an opportunity to express that, while being inspired to repurpose this print into a piece of artwork of their own,” says Katherine Madley, vice president of marketing at Game. “We also see this as an opportunity to support one of South Africa’s up-and-coming artists.”

The Wallpaper for All campaign launches today, and the design will be available every second week until August 9.
