Belfast farmers appear in court for alleged involvement in human trafficking
A father and son will remain in custody until next week after they were arrested as suspects in a human trafficking case in which scores of people were brought into the country from Mozambique, some of them younger than five years old.
Two suspects, father and son, Cornelis Johannes Uys (60) and Cornelis Johannes Albertus Uys (23) were remanded in custody by the Belfast Magistrate Court yesterday.
They were arrested by the Hawks Nelspruit-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation on Sunday as additional suspects in a human trafficking case.
Their arrest followed after the other two suspects (brothers) Carlos Bernardo Guambe (34) and Gabriel Bernardo Guambe (32) were arrested last week on charges of trafficking in person and additional charges of Contravention of Immigration Act.
All four suspects are accused of trafficking 39 people, including children under the age of five.
The victims were allegedly brought into South Africa in a taxi from Mozambique and taken to a farm in Belfast, where they were subjected to forced labour.
The Guambo brothers were remanded in custody until they were joined by the Uys duo yesterday.
The case against the four suspects was postponed to July 11, 2022 for a formal bail application.
The suspects remanded in custody.
