Middelburg municipal employees meeting with minister in effort to end strike

Employees are hoping for a breakthrough when meeting with Cogta minister Dlamini-Zuma today.

Following the fatal shooting of two people in an ongoing municipal strike in Middelburg, Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma met with municipal management on Friday, with negotiations set to continue with employees later today.

The venue and time for the meeting is yet to be confirmed, employee spokesman Kgosi Makwati confirmed to the Middelburg Observer.

A national delegation was sent to Middelburg following last Wednesday’s fatal shootings at the municipality.

Two men, one a municipal employee in the electrical department, were killed. Two others were wounded.

It was previously reported that Harris Sithole worked for the solid waste department, but according to the municipality, only the late Tshepo Maseko was employed by the authority.

Mawakti says he will update the community on progress after meeting with the minister.

Meanwhile, he says, the strike continues.

• A video of the fatal shooting surfaced a day after the incident. A 41-year-old suspect was arrested and appeared in the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
