19 learners injured in scholar transport accident in Boksburg
Reports indicate that the driver of the scholar transport vehicle failed to stop at a traffic light and was speeding.
At least 19 primary school children were rushed to hospital on Tuesday, after the scholar transport minibus they were travelling in collided with a car outside the Boksburg Police Station.
The minibus, which transported learners from various schools, collided with a Toyota Etios and, according to Boksburg SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Ntsako Ledwaba, it is believed the scholar transport was travelling at a high speed.
Reports indicate the driver of the minibus failed to stop at the traffic light on the corner of Commissioner and Rissik streets.
“The minibus was travelling east, while the westbound Etios was turning right at the traffic light. Our members jumped into action as soon as they got reports of the accident outside the station. We called emergency medical services and when multiple ambulances arrived at the scene, we saw to it that all the injured children were attended to,” Ledwaba explained.
He said that some officers climbed into the ambulances and accompanied some of the children to Tambo Memorial Hospital where they received medical assessments. “The assessments revealed that the children suffered slight injuries, but they were later discharged,” explained Ledwaba.
Ledwaba added that the minibus driver was not injured, but that the Etios driver apparently sustained a minor ankle injury.
Investigations are still underway and Ledwaba encouraged eyewitnesses to assist them with more information.
