One dead after retaining wall collapses near George

The men were dug out by other workers after the wall and sand collapsed on them.

One person died and another is in hospital in a critical but stable condition, after a retaining wall on a building site in Herold’s Bay collapsed.

The incident happened around 10:00 yesterday. The deceased and injured person both worked on the site. They were allegedly working when the wall gave way and sand came down on them.

Other workers who were present, allegedly dug them out and began CPR until emergency services arrived.

ER24 was first on the scene but needed additional help as paramedics had to negotiate around a very steep and narrow embankment.

George Metro Search and Rescue services soon also arrived to assist. Despite CPR efforts, one male patient was declared dead on scene.

The second patient was treated and transported to George Provincial Hospital.

Feedback from the police is being awaited. George Herald could not track the employers of the deceased and injured person at this stage.
