Drowning in KZN river mars New Year’s Day

A teenage boy reportedly drown after he and his friends went for a swim in the river.

A New Year’s Day swim with friends turned into a tragedy when a teenage boy drowned in the Umvoti River in KZN.

The body of the 15-year-old boy was recovered in the river near Melville, Stanger, early yesterday afternoon.

Rescue teams, including the KwaDukuza Fire Department and lifeguards, worked together to find the body of the teenager.

“He got into difficulty and one of his friends tried holding onto him, but he could not save him,” says Dylan Meyrick of IPSS Medical Rescue.

A 14-year-old boy also drowned in a dam at a farm outside Stanger last Thursday.
