A group of armed robbers made off with an undisclosed amount of money after bombing a cash van at the R28/ R41 intersection in Randfontein last night. Gauteng Police have launched a manhunt for the group of suspects involved in the cash-in-transit (CIT) heist.

National Police Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe says a preliminary investigation revealed the cash van was heading to a depot and driving along the R28 when a group of suspects travelling in a white Mercedes-Benz Vito cornered the cash van at the intersection entering Randfontein and opened fire.

Another vehicle, a white BMW also blocked the cash van.

The suspects ordered the security guards to get out of the cash van before they proceeded to blow it up. They then fled with an undisclosed amount of money.”

Numerous Randfontein residents shared on social media and community groups how they heard a loud bang and gunshots and saw smoke just before 19:00 in nearby Greenhills, Homelake and as far as Elandsvlei.

Mathe says that a 72–hour activation plan has been mobilised to apprehend those behind the heist.
