Flood update: Heavy rainfall in several provinces

Here is a round-up of some of the areas affected by flooding after continuous rainfall was experienced.

Heavy rain in parts of Gauteng, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal have resulted in evacuations in the wake of rising water levels. At least four people have been swept away by floods and two have drowned in Mpumalanga. Here are some of the stories making headlines:

In Newcastle in KZN nearly 80 residents have been evacuated or rescued.

Community members have joined rescue efforts in Newcastle.

Members of various emergency services including the Newcastle Community Policing Forum have been out and about since the early hours of the morning rescuing residents from the lower CBD and Paradise areas which are under water.

Displaced persons in the town have been urged to make their way to Fairleigh Hall for temporary accommodation.

In Pretoria in Gauteng several areas, like the M18 road in Irene and the Rietvlei Nature Reserve have been made inaccessible due to flooding.

Previous affected flood victims in Mamelodi have decided to flee their homes out of fear for their safety.

Midvaal emgergency teams have started clearing debris from bridges in and around Henley on Klip.

In Mpumalanga, certain camps in the Kruger National Park are being evacuated with rescue teams on high alert.

The Nkomazi Local Municipality urged the public to pray for its residents. The Mpumalanga News reports that at least four people have been swept away by floods and two people have drowned in the area.
