Watch: Bakkie swept off bridge into raging river

The video should serve as a warning to motorists to never try and cross low-level bridges across rivers in flood.

A video circulating on social media, showing a bakkie being swept into a raging river after the driver attempted to cross a low-level causeway, is a practical example of why motorists should never try to cross bridges that are covered by fast flowing water.

It is not known where the video was filmed, but there are many such causeways in the country, with a lot of them are currently flooded after recent rains.

Severe floods have been experienced in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Gauteng.

The Zululand Observer reports that the R618 between Mtubatuba and St Lucia is at risk of collapsing in parts, while the road through Eastern Shores Game Reserve within iSimangaliso Wetland Park, is also flooded.

The newspaper writes that 21 families were evacuated in Mzwingwenya area in eSikhaleni, KwaZulu-Natal.

The Lowvelder reports that all roads in the south of the Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga have been closed off due to flooding and safety concerns.

The newspaper also reports that Trac has advised motorists to avoid the N4 between near Mbombela after rockfalls in Schoemanskloof and Elands Valley.

Motorists are warned to refrain from attempting to drive across flooded roads, as it is impossible to see potholes or other potential dangers like sinkholes or roads that have washed away.
