Turkey rescue team member’s son dies days before father’s funeral

A double tragedy hits the Herbst family as Linda loses her husband and son within days from each other - in two separate incidents.

With just three days until his father’s funeral, Paul Herbst’s son – Sevaughn – passed away early this morning.

The 28-year-old was involved in a motorbike accident in Hillcrest, KZN.

The news was shared by his mother, Linda Herbst, on Facebook this morning.

“We have gone from a family of four to two in a matter of four days. I am numb, in disbelief. We have not even buried Paul yet,” she says.

Father’s untimely death

Paul was the director of Medi Response and was found dead at his home last Tuesday. He was a member of the South African team that rescued an 80-year-old woman who was stuck in the rubble for eight days after the Turkey earthquake.

He formed part of the team, handpicked by Gift of the Givers, who travelled to Turkey to search for survivors after a devastating earthquake hit the country at the beginning of February. The team landed back in South Africa on Saturday and days later, he was found dead in his house in KZN.

Paul’s funeral will be held at Grace Family Church Ballito on Tuesday at 11:00.
