Gareth Cliff tackles ‘cancel culture’ in new uncensored show

Gareth Cliff Uncancelled is a space where unconventional topics will be discussed.

Gareth Cliff had his life-long friend Unathi Nkayi as his first guest on Gareth Cliff Uncancelled, where the two spoke about cancel culture and the negative impact it can have in the first of a series of live podcasts.

In short cancel culture means to boycott those who have acted in an unacceptable manner or said something offensive. Kanye West is a classic example, losing a multi-million-dollar contract with Adidas after making antisemitic and racist remarks.

Gareth Cliff has also been ‘cancelled’ after remarks he made to Mudzuli Rakhivhane about her experience with racism cost him a Nando’s sponsorship.

It was however during one of his discussions with comedian Eugene Khoza, where Cliff was encouraged to share his thoughts on the matter, that resulted in the birth of Gareth Cliff Uncancelled, a live uncensored podcast discussing controversial topics.

The first episode was aired at the new CliffCentral headquarters in Sandhurst on February 24. Singer and radio personality Unathi Nkayi who did not hold back.

Both individuals took a stroll down memory lane recalling relationships and legal battles among others. Nkayi also spoke about the time when she received news that Kaya FM had let her go in 2021.

“I was making music with Prince Kaybee and his associates after Kaya FM had suspended me. Being surrounded by them, Prince Kaybee and his team at that time, was what I needed. The next day around 10:00 I received news that the radio station had fired me and five minutes after that, they publicly announced it,” said Nkayi.

The singer added that the only thing on her mind at that time was the well-being of her family and she called her parents who encouraged her to take legal action.

“Too many things are going unquestioned in the world today. We’re afraid to share our opinions for fear of being unpopular or, ultimately, of being cancelled. So, we’ve set out to create a space for curious and inquisitive people who’re piqued by unconventional thinking and conversations,” said Cliff on the creation of Gareth Cliff Uncancelled.
