Robbers bomb ATM in Benoni during load-shedding

Apart from bombing an ATM, robbers also held up staff at an ATM in Benoni, demanding cash and cellphones.

An ATM at a filling station in Benoni was bombed in the early hours of Tuesday during load-shedding.

The ATM at a Sasol filling station on Rangeview Road, Mackenzie Park, was bombed, and an undisclosed amount of money was taken at 02:00 on March 28.

According to Captain Nomsa Sekele, the spokesperson for the Benoni SAPS, 10 suspects pounced on unsuspecting petrol attendants and shop employees during load-shedding.

“The suspects held the personnel at gunpoint and demanded cash and cellphones,” she said.

“Shortly after, the ATM exploded, and the suspects fled the scene.”

Taken from the onsite convenience store and the ATM were undisclosed amounts of cash.

“Because load-shedding was in effect at the time of the incident, descriptions of the getaway vehicles are not currently available,” said Sekele.

“It is evident that the criminals took advantage of this to execute the bombing.”

A case of business robbery and ATM bombing is under investigation.
