Bail granted to George sports coach who allegedly raped minor
A young man believed to have sexually assaulted a 13-year-old victim from the Wilderness area, is out on bail.

While the police and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) are awaiting the forensic extraction of cellphone evidence, a sports coach in his early 20s from George, suspected of statutory rape, has been released on bail.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies, the George Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit is investigating a sexual assault case reported to the police during August 2022.
It is alleged that the man sexually assaulted a 13-year-old victim from the Wilderness area between June and August of that year.
“Investigation led to the arrest of the suspect who was later released,” said Spies. At this stage there is no information available of his involvement with any other cases or victims.
Spokesperson for the NPA, Eric Ntabazalila confirmed the investigation and said charges against the accused include sexual grooming and statutory rape.
“He was released on bail of R1 000 with conditions that he is not allowed to communicate directly or indirectly with the complainant or her family members,” Ntabazalila said.
More bail conditions, such as not being allowed to work with children, could be added during his next court appearance.
He was warned to appear in the Thembalethu Regional Court on June 19.
Great caution is taken to not identify the minor victim directly or indirectly.
