Mpumalanga businessman charged for assault on domestic worker

The woman was assaulted after the businessman told he couldn't pay her for the days work and he took anything as payment.

A Mpumalanga domestic worker sustained injuries during an alleged assault at the hands of her employer on Sunday.

The stiches on Maria Mahlangu’s head and the cast on her hand tell a story of the horrific ordeal she went through when the man she worked for allegedly assaulted her.

Police arrested the businessman, and he was expected to appear before Witbank Magistrate’s Court earlier today.

Mahlangu told Witbank News the man said he could not pay her for the day’s work and allegedly told her to take anything she wants as a payment.

“I took a bottle of perfume. That is when the man threw the contents of my purse out and started beating me.”

A neighbour alerted the neighbourhood watch after Mahlangu’s screams for help were heard.

The man allegedly started yielding knives around and slashed open a neighbourhood responder’s arm with a knife after the responder tried to stop him. He was eventually stopped when he was shot with rubber bullets.

Police took the man to hospital and arrested him officially on Wednesday.
