Foreign national caught with explosives in Mpumalanga town

The police are investigating whether a man who was recently arrested in Sabie might be part of the ATM bombing syndicates in Mpumalanga.

An undocumented foreign national was arrested in Sabie on Thursday while in possession of explosives.

According to a statement by police, the Mpumalanga Tactical Response Team and Mpumalanga Tracking Team followed up on information gathered, which resulted in a big fish being nabbed.

“The suspect, a 31-year-old Zimbabwean national, was tracked down and apprehended while walking in the street. He was found in possession of ten superpower blasting cartridges, ten green cap fuses and 50 metres of detonating cord.

“The suspect was arrested for unlawful possession of explosives and further investigations will be conducted to establish if the suspect is part of the ATM bombing syndicates in the province.”

The police said the Department of Home Affairs will also be brought on board and they cannot rule out the addition of a charge of contravention of the Immigration Act.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Sabie Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
