Two shot dead as police foil CIT robbery in Pretoria

The long weekend proved to be an opportunity for criminals to pounce, but SAPS officers in a Pretoria suburb were quick to react.

Police in Centurion, Pretoria, fatally shot two gun-wielding men in another attempted cash-in-transit (CIT) heist during the Easter weekend.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, police foiled the CIT along John Vorster Drive on Saturday afternoon.

The multidisciplinary team was following up on intelligence-driven information when they intercepted a group of armed suspects.

Mathe says two robbers were fatally wounded during a shoot-out with the police, and three AK-47 automatic rifles were recovered.

“The men were spotted at a local shopping centre driving a stolen black BMW and waiting for a G4S cash van,” she explains.

“The men sped off when they realised that the police were on their trail, which resulted in a chase on Olievenhoutbosch Road until John Vorster Drive.”

The police are on the hunt for two men who escaped.

She says the police noted that criminals took advantage of the holiday season.

“Criminals seek to prey on people while they are relaxed, while the communities enjoy themselves. They [residents] should be aware of their surroundings and take steps to secure their loved ones and property,” she warns.
