Mpumalanga police seek bogus taxi driver for rape

A minor who is near the end of her pregnancy term claims she was raped by a man who offered her a ride in eMbalenhle last year.

The eMbalenhle police in Mpumalanga are searching for a bogus taxi driver who alleged raped a 16-year-old girl.

She is now eight months pregnant.

According to Constable Busi Mthethwa, the eMbalenhle police spokesperson, the girl went to the police station to open a case for a rape that occurred last August.

The girl alleges that a man, who she thought was a taxi driver, raped her after she stopped a taxi in eMbalenhle (outside Secunda) Ext 2, for a ride to Ext 7.

Only the driver was in the vehicle at the time.

Along the way, the driver told her he urgently needed to collect people at gate eight near Roodebank. He promised to drop her off at home upon their return, and she agreed.

Mthethwa says the victim claimed when the minibus arrived at gate eight, the driver parked it in an open field, got out and opened the girl’s door.

He reportedly forced her out of the taxi, covered her mouth, pushed her to the ground and raped her.

According to the Mthethwa, the victim is able to point out her rapist should she see him again. Mthethwa said a rape case was opened, but no arrests have been made.
