Thapelo Amad resigns as Joburg mayor before motion of no confidence

The Al Jama-ah councillor resigned a few hours before city councillors were due to vote in a no-confidence motion against him.

Member of a Muslim minority political party, Al Jama-ah councillor Thapelo Amad, has resigned as mayor of Johannesburg.

The announcement was made during a media briefing held by several political parties yesterday.

Amad’s resignation comes a day before he was expected to face a motion of no confidence against him during a special council meeting today. The meeting has since been postponed.

The speaker of the council, Councillor Colleen Makhubele, has confirmed that the new executive mayor will be elected during the extra-ordinary council meeting scheduled for next Tuesday.
