Hijacked Krugersdorp man found dead, suspect dies in hospital
The man was overpowered and forced back into his vehicle as he was about to open his gate at his house.
Two men, one believed to be a suspect and the other the victim, died of gunshot wounds to the head after a hijacking in Mindalore, Krugersorp on Thursday night.
Theo van Rooyen was hijacked in front of his house shortly after he arrived home at 19:00 and stopped at the gate to open it.
Three men, one armed, approached him before he could open his gate and ordered him back into his vehicle. The armed man got in the back seat with Van Rooyen and they drove off.
That night, Van Rooyen’s wife, Kerry van der Merwe, made a desperate plea on Facebook for help finding her husband.
Captain Solomon Sibiya from the West Rand Police says Van Rooyen’s vehicle was spotted later that evening and followed to Sinqobile by security guards.
When the hijackers realised someone was following them, two of the suspects abandoned Van Rooyen’s vehicle and fled. The guards stopped next to the vehicle and discovered someone on the back seat with a gunshot wound to the head. It was however not Van Rooyen in the car.
The man was rushed to hospital where he passed away early yesterday morning.
Sibiya says that later yesterday morning, police found Van Rooyen’s body in an open field next to Soul City informal settlement along Tudor Road.
“He had also been shot in the head,” says Sibiya.
