Video: JMPD officer dies, allegedly at the hands of SAPS cop

Ipid probes the death of Constable Sibusiso Zikalala who was shot and killed, allegedly by a police officer.

A moving memorial service was held yesterday for the fallen Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department officer Constable Sibusiso Zikalala who was shot and killed in Braamfontein.

The shooting took place outside a nightclub in Braamfontein after an alleged altercation between a SAPS officer and the late Zikalala.

Zikalala of Naledi, Soweto, was off-duty at the time of the incident. He served as an officer for 16 years and at the K9 Unit which investigates high-profile cases which involve criminal syndicates and drug-related matters.

Metro police spokesperson Officer Xolani Fihla said the department was greatly saddened by the loss of its member.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our member,” said Fihla.

The memorial for their fallen colleague was held at their head office in Johannesburg CBD. The family of Zikalala was in attendance.

According to the Independent Investigative Police Directorate (Ipid) spokesperson Robbie Raburabu, Zikalala was on Sunday night shot by a SAPS member.

Ipid is investigating a murder case.

Investigation

The Citizen reported that the JMPD officer was exiting the parking lot when a vehicle allegedly prevented him from leaving.

“An argument ensued between the driver and the officer, and shots were fired. The JMPD officer was declared dead on the scene,” said Fihla.

He told The Citizen that the JMPD officer was off-duty when the shooting occurred and that they may not provide more details as the case is under investigation by SAPS.
