Watch: Snow in various parts of the country
Monday blues have a literal meaning this morning as ice-cold temperatures and snowfall are making for a chilly start to the week.
Cold temperatures, wet and windy conditions and even snowfall are being noted in various parts of Gauteng.
While snow is not uncommon in parts of the Cape provinces and the Drakensberg, it is rare in Gauteng.
The South African Weather Service (Saws) said last night was the coldest night in Pretoria this year. It forecast chilly temperatures and low-level snowfall across parts of South Africa and Lesotho, including Gauteng, from the weekend into Monday.
“Light snowfall is possible over the extreme eastern highveld regions and the escarpment of Mpumalanga on Monday, where maximum temperatures will be below 7°C,” the statement read.

Definitely time to bring out those winter stockings and thermal vest. It’s a “magusha” kinda of day.

Warnings issued
Saws has issued various levels of warnings for disruptive snowfall and other extreme weather conditions across the country.
A yellow level 2 warning has been released for the Dr Beyers Naude (excluding the Graaff-Reinet area), Kou-Kamma, Amahlathi, Mhlontlo and Ntabankulu local municipalities, the western parts of eThukela, uMgungundlovu and Harry Gwala districts in KZN, as well as the eastern highveld of Mpumalanga.
Saws has issued an orange level 6 warning for disruptive snowfall in Chris Hani District Municipality, Senqu, Eundini, Matatiele, Umzimvubu, Raymond Mhlaba and the Blue Crane Route, as well as the Dr Beyers Naude municipality (including the Graaff-Reinet area).
It says disruptive snow that could result in major mountain passes being closed, in communities being isolated and in the loss of livestock is expected over these areas.
“The public and farmers are advised that very cold and wet conditions are expected to persist over the southeastern areas of the Northern Cape, Free State, the interior areas of the Eastern Cape and KZN. These conditions are expected to spread to Mpumalanga and Gauteng, following the development of a cut-off low over the south-eastern interior.
