uMkhonto we Sizwe Party (MKP) senior provincial leader Visvin Reddy (53) briefly appeared in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, charged with inciting public violence.

Reddy’s court appearance follows a video clip, widely circulated on social media, in which he announced that there would be anarchy in South Africa if the courts put the brakes on his party ahead of next month’s elections.

Hours before his appearance, MKP spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela told 702 radio station that members who incite violence will be disciplined, threatening expulsion.

However, Reddy has only been served with a warning.

“Any member that utters or makes any pronouncements of violence will be dealt with drastically and we’ll expel them.”

He said Reddy would be dealt with in the same way that the party dealt with its youth leader Bonginkosi Khanyile, who received a warning.

The electoral code forbids threats against the Electoral Commission of South Africa and states that political parties and candidates must speak out against threats of violence.

The case was transferred to the Durban Regional Court and postponed to June 14.
