Soshanguve filling station bombing: Bomb squad investigators granted bail

CCTV surveillance footage shows the three collecting notes and coins from the scene. The money was never handed in as evidence.

Three police officers who were reportedly seen taking money after a bombing incident at a filling station in Soshanguve, Pretoria, were granted R3 000 bail each after appearing in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s court yesterday.

The three officers are bomb squad investigators stationed in the explosives section in Colbyn and are facing charges of theft and defeating the ends of justice.

The Hawks arrested them yesterday morning.

According to Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale, Captain Lephalala (47), Warrant Officer Ngwenya (33) and Sergeant Sithole (37) were seen on CCTV surveillance collecting notes and coins from the scene and placing them in a bag.

Mogale said one of the suspects was seen taking the bag to their state vehicle before leaving the scene. An investigation revealed the money was never handed in as evidence.

“Their court appearance is consequent to their arrest this morning [June 6] following a bombing incident that occurred on April 15 at [a] filling station in Soshanguve.

“The trio was allegedly seen on CCTV surveillance footage purportedly putting notes and coins into a bag. Investigation revealed that the money from the bag was never handed in as evidence at the SAP 13.”

The case was postponed to August 7.
