Tourist family hijacked in Mbombela: Another blue-light crime?
The victims were driven around for nearly four hours by the perpetrators before being released. Their vehicle was recovered later on.
An unconfirmed number of hijackers (four or possibly more) targeted a tourist family in Mbombela on Tuesday in what is believed to be another blue-light crime.
According to Securicon’s Mbombela area business manager Callum MacPherson, the incident occurred at around 18:00.
“The family was travelling along Piet Retief Street when they were reportedly pulled over by an unknown vehicle using blue lights. The assailants then robbed the family of their Toyota Hilux, before loading them into their vehicle. It is believed that the family was driven around for nearly four hours in an apparent effort to create time for them [the perpetrators] to escape without getting caught,” says MacPherson.
According to him, the victims were unharmed and eventually dropped off near Wilhelm Street.
At around 22:00 the victims contacted the guest house where they were staying, which in turn contacted MacPherson.
According to local police spokesperson Captain Zandile Gqawa, their vehicle was later recovered in KaNyamazane.
