Cop injured, 3 suspects shot dead in Durban police shoot-out

A woman's hijacking in Umlazi led to a car chase and shoot-out between suspects and police officers.

A police officer is in stable condition after being shot during a shoot-out in which three suspected hijackers were killed at T Section in Umlazi, Durban, today.

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda reported that the suspects had hijacked a woman’s vehicle at R Section in Umlazi, prompting a swift police response.

“A high-speed chase ensued, and at T Section, the suspects opened fire on the police, leading to a shoot-out in self-defence. Three suspects were shot and killed in the exchange. A police officer was shot in the arm and is in stable condition,” said Netshiunda.

He added that the suspects were found in possession of three firearms and the hijacked vehicle. The woman who was hijacked was not harmed.

Recent shootings

On Wednesday, The Witness reported that five suspects, wanted for a string of murder and business robbery cases, were shot dead in a shoot-out with police in Cato Crest, Durban, on Tuesday night.

Last week, nine suspected criminals were killed in several shoot-outs with police.
