A man shot his wife dead and then turned the gun on himself in KaBokweni, Mpumalanga, this morning.

This is according to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli, based on preliminary investigation reports.

He says police and emergency services personnel were dispatched to the scene, but both people died.

While investigations continue, the acting provincial police commissioner, Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, says the incident is a stark reminder of the urgent need for awareness and prevention of domestic violence and support for those impacted by it.

“As part of efforts to address the challenges of violence, the Mpumalanga SAPS has organised a prayer day in Ermelo in August, when members of faith-based organisations will be in solidarity and pray against this scourge that has engulfed our society.”

He extended his condolences to the families and loved ones affected by the incident.

“Domestic violence is an issue that affects individuals and communities globally, and we urge anyone who may be experiencing or is aware of domestic violence to seek help. There are numerous resources and support systems available, including our Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 and victim-friendly facilities at police stations for assistance and guidance,” Mkhwanazi says.
