Armed robbers blow up CIT van in Roodepoort

Police are investigating after suspects rammed a G4S van on Main Reef Road and blew it open with explosives.

Police and security personnel were on the scene of a cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery on Main Reef Road in Roodepoort this morning.

According to bystanders, the incident occurred just before 09:00 when armed robbers in a Mahindra SUV forced a G4S armoured van to a standstill.

The suspects then used explosives to blow open the vehicle.

The Mahindra used to ram the van has burnt out, although it is unclear whether it was intentionally set alight.

Details remain sketchy at this stage, and it is not yet known whether the robbers made off with any cash or if anyone sustained serious injuries.

The Roodepoort Record has approached provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo for more information.
