Police target illegal miners and domestic violence in Soweto
The Doornkop station commander called on residents to help curb unlawful mining in abandoned shafts and report rising cases of household assaults.
Police in Thulani, Doornkop in Soweto have intensified operations to curb illegal mining and address rising cases of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm linked to domestic disputes, reports Soweto Urban.
According to Doornkop police station commander Colonel Jabulani Tshabalala, officers have been actively targeting illegal miners operating in abandoned shafts and have confiscated equipment used in these unlawful activities.
Tshabalala said police are committed to addressing a range of criminal activities within the precinct to ensure the safety and security of residents.
“We are addressing this challenge and have taken tools from illegal miners that they are using in old shafts,” he said.
He added that the station is also concerned about a high number of assault and grievous bodily harm cases reported in the area, many of which are linked to domestic violence and family disputes.
Despite ongoing community education and awareness efforts, Tshabalala said these incidents remain a persistent challenge.
“We continue to educate the community about these crimes, but it remains an issue within our communities,” he said.
Police have urged residents to work closely with law enforcement and report illegal mining activities and domestic violence cases to help curb crime in the area.
