IEC online registration portal now data-free
South Africans can now register to vote, update their details or check their registration status online without using mobile data.
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has announced that its online voter registration portal is now zero-rated across all mobile networks, reports Polokwane Review.
This means eligible voters can register to vote, update their personal details, or check their registration status without using any mobile data.
How it works
Simply visit the website on your phone. No data costs will be incurred, regardless of your mobile network provider.
What you can do on the portal
- Register to vote for the first time
- Update your address and personal details
- Check your current registration status
Why this matters
The IEC’s decision to zero-rate the portal removes a huge barrier for many South Africans, particularly those in communities who may not have regular access to data.
Voter registration is a critical step in ensuring that every eligible citizen can participate in the democratic process. The 2026 Local Government Elections are scheduled for November 4.
No data costs.
The IEC has encouraged all eligible South Africans to use the portal and ensure their details are up to date ahead of the elections.
