12 dead as Cape Town to Zimbabwe bus overturns on N1 in Free State
Dozens of injured passengers have been rushed to hospital after a major bus crash forced traffic diversions between Edenburg and Trompsburg.
Twelve people have died and 66 others were injured after a bus travelling from Cape Town to Zimbabwe overturned on the N1 between Edenburg and Trompsburg, last night (July 30).
According to Bloemfontein Courant, Free State Department of Health spokesperson Mondli Mvambi said 65 patients were transported to Albert Nzula Hospital in Trompsburg and one was taken to Pelonomi Trauma Hospital in Bloemfontein.
The bus overturned on the N1 about 24km north of Trompsburg in the direction of Edenburg.
Traffic disruption and route diversions
“Motorists travelling on the N1 between Trompsburg and Edenburg are urged to be on high alert, reduce speed, and expect significant delays. Traffic officials are diverting vehicles where possible,” Mvambi said.
The crash scene remains under investigation.
Traffic officials have advised motorists to use an alternative diversion route via the R717:
For motorists travelling from Bloemfontein towards Cape Town:
- Exit the N1 at Edenburg onto the R717 to Trompsburg (39.1km)
- Rejoin the N1 at Trompsburg
For motorists travelling from Cape Town towards Bloemfontein:
- Exit the N1 at Trompsburg onto the R717 to Edenburg (39.1km)
- Rejoin the N1 at Edenburg
