3 things voters need to know this month

With Election Day fast approaching, here are three things voters need to know before heading to the polls.

With just over a month to go before the 2026 Local Government Elections, voters can apply for a special vote, find out who is contesting the elections and confirm their registration and voting station details.

Special vote applications close

Registered voters who are unable to cast their ballots at their voting station on November 4 have until 17:00 on October 12 to apply for a special vote.

Registered voters who qualify to apply include:

  • People living with disabilities
  • Pregnant women
  • Elderly people with mobility challenges
  • People unable to vote on Election Day due to work-related commitments

Special vote applications can be made on IEC webiste and its local offices across the country

Candidate lists

The list of the 136 790 candidates contesting the 10 526 seats is also available. This year’s candidates will contest seats across the eight metropolitan municipalities, 44 district municipalities and 205 local municipalities nationwide.

Voting station

Voters can confirm their registration details and voting station information through:

  • SMS: Send your ID number to 32810 to confirm your registration, voting station and sequence number (a sequence number helps voters find their names on the voters’ roll).
  • Contact centre: Call 0800 11 8000 for your voting station details and sequence number in your preferred language.
  • WhatsApp: Send a message to 060 088 0000 and select ‘Am I registered?’

Applications for special votes, the candidate list and voter registration information are available on the IEC website.
