Durban man dies after stabbing his girlfriend

A community is left reeling following a violent hostage situation that resulted in the deaths of a KZN couple.

A man who killed his girlfriend before attempting suicide by hanging himself died in hospital on October 2 from injuries sustained in the incident, reports Southlands Sun.

Ayanda Maphela (33) was rushed to King Edward Hospital after the police found him lying on the floor in the garage at his house in Yellowwood Park on September 11.

His girlfriend’s body, Nontobeko Kweyama (32) was found lying inside the house after the police were alerted by neighbours who heard her screaming for help.

Maphela was arrested after he stabbed his girlfriend multiple times in Lark Lane in Yellowwood Park. It is alleged that the victim had come to visit her boyfriend on the day of the alleged incident.

It is alleged that the victim was being held hostage by Maphela at his house when the incident occurred.

According to sources, when the police arrived at Maphela’s home they found a string wrapped tightly around his neck and cutting his throat. Apparently the string had snapped, causing Maphela’s body to fall to the floor.

The incident sparked community anger with the chairperson of the Montclair Community Police Forum, pastor Desmond James, calling on GBV victims to speak out about abuse.

“It is a serious violation of human dignity, and its consequences extend beyond the victim to children, families and the wider community. As chairperson of the Montclair Community Police Forum, my immediate concern is for the safety, dignity and well-being of the woman affected. No woman should have to live in fear within her own home or suffer abuse at the hands of someone she trusted,” said James.

He urged people who become aware of possible abuse not to look away, but to respond responsibly and assist the victim in obtaining appropriate support.
